our country
Kuuku Ya’u people’s country has deep cultural significance of sacred places, practices, stories, and ceremonies. It is this connection that gave way to recognition of their native title.
On 25 November 2021, the Federal Court of Australia recognized the Kuuku Ya’u people’s native title rights under the *Native Title Act 1993 (Cth)* over 1,201 km 2 with exclusive possession recognized over 1,193km 2 and non-exclusive possession recognised over the remaining 8km 2.
While the Kuuku Ya’u people had previously had their native title recognized in other areas, it was decided to establish a new stand-alone RNTBC for this new determination – namely Kaapay Kuuyun Aboriginal Corporation Registered Native Title Body Corporate to facilitate the administration of Kuuku Ya’u native title interests and rights.
